Many think the startup life is all sunshine and rainbows.
People say, “It’s nothing but a glorified, part-time job!”
But think again, my friend.
Many details go unmentioned. The overtime, the grueling targets, the broken A/C units, and steep learning curves...
The key is to maintain a strong balance between work and play.
For some, this can be difficult.
For others, however, this balance forms the very fabric of their culture.
7Geese is a performance management and goal-setting solution that helps companies measure and track the goals of their employees. They officially launched in 2011, and have since moved into the (increasingly) famous 55 Water Street building here in Gastown, along with RESAAS.
In fact, we’re neighbours! They are literally across the hall from us. We can hear them every time a particularly enthusiastic game of ping-pong is underway.
Which brings me to my first point…
They play ping-pong!
Their rudimentary leaderboard consists solely of folded pieces of cardboard tucked into the crack of a wooden pole. It’s pretty neat, actually. To move up, simply defeat the person above you. If the glove has been thrown, one cannot decline the invitation.
Rules are rules. Another one of which is that ping-pong matches will only take place in the afternoon, so that everyone has a chance to get some work done.
They certainly embrace the mantra of work hard, play hard.
Every Wednesday one or two team members present on a topic of interest for the rest of the team during a paid lunch hour. But these lunches aren’t just simple team building exercises, they’re centered solely around topics that relate to their industry, which benefits the growth of the entire team.
These lunches promote the value of being a learning-focused organization that strives for ongoing development. They share a few laughs with some of the presentations too, so having fun is equally as important.
It’s pretty cool!
Their corporate structure is horizontal with few managers. And as such, each member of the team is responsible for their own particular area, which helps to instill a sense of accountability and focus.
To help retain this accountability, they do a stand-up each week to reflect on what each person’s key priority will be for the coming days.
However, with great responsibility comes great fun. They’ve organized some awesome social events, such as rooftop BBQs and my personal favourite...bubble soccer!
And to top it all off? Unlimited vacation.
This perk provides team members the flexibility to take time off, but which is still managed to ensure that company initiatives don’t fall behind.
All in all, I'd say that 7Geese does a fantastic job of epitomizing the true startup culture seen in Vancouver.
Heads down, feet up.
Thanks so much, Arash! We had a great time learning all about your office and culture.
Startups like you make RESAAS proud to be one as well.
