So far the Vancouver Startup Tour has been full of adventure, fun and (most importantly) innovative solutions for us to learn from.
Foodee taught us the value of target-setting; Battlefy showed us how to turn a negative into a positive; both Spark and Trippeo revealed the power of small numbers; 7Geese displayed the benefit of education; while Kashoo illustrated the importance of teamwork.
What more could we possibly hope to come across at our next startup?
There’s absolutely no way that we’d find something new.
Well, turns out we found a moose.
Or rather, a moose walked out from behind a closed door, danced around for a bit, dished out some friendly high-fives and then gave us all a big group hug.
Needless to say, Advisor Websites provided a fairly unique office tour.
Located in the heart of Vancouver’s business district, Advisor Websites is on a crusade to unite the old school with the new by providing leading-edge website software to the financial and insurance industries.
Unlike our previous stops, these guys were bumping elbows with suits and ties inside tall, shiny glass towers.
It was clear that we were far from the comfy, little Gastown neighbourhood we had grown accustomed to. Where were the low-rise brick buildings? No more socks and sandals? Dogs, any dogs?
But the second we stepped foot inside their office we felt right at home.
A foosball table!
Oh yeah, now we’re talking.
At the end of every day (usually), the team at Advisor Websites will hang out in the front area, play some foosball and have some fun. They even set up a system that plays vintage arcade games! And what’s more, they struck a sweet partnership deal with Lighthouse Brewery to supply their office with a fresh keg each week.
(Verified by yours truly.)
What all this taught us, however, was what it means to be a part of something you love.
This face was actually written on their wall: Build A Team We Love.
It’s one of their 4 core values, along with Think Forward, Make It Happen, and Create Wow Experiences.
A “Wall of Wow” highlights some of the positive feedback they’ve received through customer support. They also have a neat system in place where one team member can give someone else recognition for the work they’ve done.
Around every corner team spirit is reinforced.
Each quarter a certain theme is determined, around which they will hold a communal goal. This most recent quarter was based around building blocks, for example. The team split off into their respective departments and were given a box of lego to complete. (Some went better than others.)
Happiness is paramount.
If someone is feeling run-down, then they are free to take a day off - no questions asked. They also continually hold fun activities together such as karaoke nights, beach BBQs, softball games and kayaking in the summer, snowshoeing in the winter, archery tag...the list goes on!
In fact, Advisor Websites have done such an effective job at building such a positive office environment that Small Businesses BC named them one of the Top 5 Places to Work.
You bet I’ll cheers to that.
Thanks for showing us around your office, Maggie, Alex and Marbles!
Startups like you make RESAAS proud to be one as well.
